Team Russia to Bryzgalov: "Stay Away Comrade"

It would seem that things could not get any worse for Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, but word just broke that Bryzgalov's national home team, Russia, will not invite Bryz to be the netminder for the World Championships.

Instead Russia will turn to Semyon Varlmov. Some may not consider this to be that big of a blow to Bryz but I see it differently. Bryz underperformed throughout the season and in the playoffs. While the Flyers struggled mightily to score goals against the New Jersey Devils, Bryz still let in those easy goals that plagued him throughout this entire season.

The game winning goal he allowed last night was a total joke. After attempting to play the puck off his stick, it was deflected by a charging Devil and the puck slid right between his legs. As usual Bryz looked completely lost.

Maybe not receiving an invite to play for the Motherland at the World Championships is a positive for Bryz. Time off and away from hockey may let him clear his head and reflect on an extremely disappointing season and post season. Plus a vacation will provide Bryz with more than enough time to ponder about the universe, how sexy his husky would be if she were a human, and how monkeys should not travel into space.

Thank you Bryz for a season of your colorful commentary, and a plethora of five-hole goals.

Devils Top Flyers in OT, Lead 2-1

(From ESPN.com)

Most people thought the Flyers, after whooping the Penguins, the odds on favorite to win the Stanley Cup, would trample over the Devils in Round 2. Those people were sorely mistaken. After an extended rest in between rounds, the Flyers seem to have accrued a good amount of rust, looking flat in all three games thus far in round 2.

The Flyers struck first with a goal from Brayden Schenn 6:08 into the game. The Devils turned up the heat and before the 1st period was over scored 2 goals within :20 by Patrik Elias and Ilya Kovalchuk respectively. The Flyers tied the game with the only goal of the 2nd period when Matt Carle scored on an assist from Hartnell and Voracek. Despite going into the 3rd period a tie game, the Devils clearly dominated on the ice. Fast forward to overtime with less than three minutes left in the period, Alexei Ponikarovsky recovers his own blocked shot off of Ilya Bryzgalov's pads and wins the game for the Devils.

OT Game winning Goal

The Flyers better shake off that rust soon. They could possibly go down 3-1 on Sunday in a best of 7 round if they don't pull their act together. They need to get back to their round 1 form. They aren't hitting as much, and not taking advantage of their power plays. In Game 3, they trailed New Jersey in hits 28-30. They also only took advantage of their power play once, scoring in 1 of 5 chances.
